As a combat veteran suffering from enslavement to my negative thoughts and substance abuse, the consequences finally mounted up enough for me to make a change.
Though I already had enough of my reckless behavior, it was loved ones who helped push me in the right direction.
After receiving the proper care and investing in myself, I was able to establish life after the military.
By getting clean from substances and working on the broken pieces of my inner-self, I was able to take healthy chances. I found strength to make choices that scared the crap out of me but would actually benefit me in the long run.
There is hope for the veteran and first responder beyond the internal shame from self-disappointment.
The confliction and confusion of feeling honored to be able to serve but resenting experiences while serving is unique to veterans and first responders alike.
The expectations on this select group can be heavy, and the burden of failing our own expectations creates this internal shame.
Working with veterans and first responders in addiction is a passion for me. I show my commitment to help vets and first responders by offering a special sliding scale, making deeper level treatment a reality. I desire to help others as I was helped. I am honored to team up alongside military service veterans and first responders, achieving a new mission and challenge in their lives.
This isn’t the VA.
My focus is on individual work.
Part of my own healing was weekly duel-diagnosis groups put on by my mentor, Leif Carlson, at the VA. I have a great respect for what a group of like-minded people with like-minded goals can do in the health of humans, and I encourage clients who can access these free resources to do so!
That being said, you still can and should do deeper work.
Unfortunately, the VA doesn’t provide this deeper individual work. It’s just not a financially feasible modality for them, because there are too many veterans who all need that type of attention.
I want to give you my full time and attention because you matter.
You deserve a clinician who understands PTSD firsthand, and, most importantly, a counselor that will remember your name and who you are.
You are who you are because you have the ability to make decisions that scare the crap out of most others.
It’s called bravery!
