Where are you located?
5150 Sunrise Blvd. Suite F4, Fair Oaks, Ca 95628
What are your hours? What days do you work?
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, afternoon to the evening. To secure time slots, make your appointments a week in advance to be safe.
Do you have any availability other than your normal times? What if I’m freaking out and need quick help?
If it is a genuine emergency, 911 is the go to.
However, one of the big advantages of working with Recovery Hill is that I make myself more available than most therapists. This is not a lack of boundaries on my end. This is understanding that addiction comes with impulsive behavior and trusting that my clients won’t take advantage of my time. I have only had one client take advantage of this system.
I offer short, 10-minute venting calls so clients can regulate their emotions. I charge longer according to the session rate.
Sometimes, I will not have that availability. In treatment, we’ll work to find you multiple options in these scenarios so that there is not a dependence on Recovery Hill.
How do I set up an initial appointment?
You can contact me via the many options on this site. After an initial free phone consultation, and if we both feel this can be a good fit, then we will schedule the soonest session available to begin the initial stages of treatment. I will send a follow-up text with all the information you need to move forward.
With what age ranges and with whom do you work?
I specialize with people struggling on the whole spectrum of substance use – from earlier stages of misuse to the deepest levels of chemical dependency and addiction.
As a Certified Brainspotting Therapist, I also specialize with trauma clients. You do not have to also have a substance abuse issue to get help. Using Brainspotting, I can see you solely for trauma-related issues.
I work with all genders from the ages of 15 and above. Unfortunately, it is rare to find access to an addictions specialist that works with adolescents. I fit that mold.
I also specialize with working with veterans and other first responders. A combat veteran myself, serving in Afghanistan in 2003-2004, I understand the unique complexities that comes with the honor of being in this group.
Family and couples work are a part of Recovery Hill, as well. If your support system remains unchanged, you will also remain unchanged. Either you need to find a new system, or we need to make your current system functional.
*Note: I am not a Marriage and Family Therapist, so if we reach a time when you need to go outside the scope of my service, I can refer you to wonderful clinicians for further help as needed.
What insurance do you take?
None. I do offer, upon request, a monthly invoice/superbill showing payments you’ve made. This invoice will have all necessary information for you to attempt to get reimbursement from your insurance provider.
What is Brainspotting?
Brainspotting is the tool I use to take treatment to a deeper level after initial stabilization. This modality allows me to go beyond traditional counseling and get to rooted issues that have helped perpetuate substance abuse and other poor coping skills.
Derived from EMDR, Brainspotting provides a neurobiological tool for accessing, diagnosing, and treating a wide range of somatic and emotionally based conditions. Using this process, we can work on fears, resentments, grief and loss, work and sports performance, and all other traumas.
Please watch the videos explaining this process on the resources page. By accessing deep regions of the brain via eye positioning, we can put the healing process into super drive.
Think of this simple analogy: If driving to San Francisco from Sacramento in the right three lanes represents traditional talk therapy, and the carpool lane is EMDR, then Brainspotting is taking BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit).
Do you do groups?
Recovery Hill does have a weekly adult group called Surrender Hill. However, I am against groups as the main model of treatment, so the group is used only to strengthen the one-on-one treatment model. Again, this group will NOT replace individual sessions, but used in conjunction. Ask to find out more about the intention of the group.
The group is an hour long, and kept small to ensure a healthy setting. The cost of the group is $25 a week.
You can ask about Frame Work: Level 1 as well; a one-day intensive that will challenge every insecure thought you’ve had about yourself. This is not patty-cake!… and it’s not an easy sale.
How long are your sessions, and how often do I come?
Unlike from common outpatient addiction treatment providers, I do not run several groups a week that you must attend. Though there are occasions where we do optional One Day Retreats – events focused on outdoor exercise, meditation, processing and connecting – the primary focus is one-on-one sessions.
These sessions typically last 45 minutes for a regular session. Brainspotting sessions are back-to-back 45-minutes. If you’re still using substances and struggling to maintain abstinence, I’ll see you two times a week until you attain stability (or require a higher level of care). If you’re stabilized and your chemical use is mostly in remission, I will see you once a week.
After sustained sobriety and growth in holistic wellness, you can expect to step treatment down accordingly: once every two weeks, once a month, periodic tune-ups.
I got into some legal issues and need a signature on a dotted line...
I can offer that, but don’t expect to just pay me off for my signature. You will be required to do some actual counseling work. If you’re forced into treatment because of some legal issue, you might as well take advantage of the chance to learn a thing or two about yourself.
You will not find judgment here; I won’t make any assumptions about you because you got into some legal trouble.
How much do you charge?
$165 per 45-minute session. Brainspotting and other Somatic-type sessions last an hour and a half (2x 45-minute sessions).
Is there a sliding scale?
Yes, for rare occasions.
What is your cancellation policy?
Recovery Hill has a strict, non-negotiable 48-hour cancellation policy.
However, I do offer two options for situations when you cannot make your face-to-face appointment: 1) I will offer a “phoner” (session over the phone). 2) If a phoner is not an option, I will see if another person involved with your treatment process (parent, spouse, sibling, etc.) can take your place.
If none of these options work, and we are within the 48-hour time frame, you must still make payment made for the missed session.
What if I am late?
For the respect of everyone’s time, I will not be more than 15 minutes late to a session. I expect you to reciprocate that courtesy.
Are you against medication, and what does “holistic wellness” mean?
I can answer these questions only on an individual basis. Most people have the potential to live a full life without the assistance of commonly prescribed medications. I know this to be true firsthand.
“Holistic wellness” is living life by meeting basic human needs: sleep, proper nutrition, exercise, human connection and connectedness, a drive for something you’re passionate about, setting and achieving goals, mindfulness and spiritual connection, security, and stability.
Covering these bases will undoubtedly bring you fulfillment.
Can I see you while on Suboxone or other medicated assistance protocols?
You’d better be seeing someone while on it, so do it the right way!
When done correctly, medication assistance can be very helpful. I have seen people deep in the throes of opiate addiction make quick turnarounds with a simple model of collaborative care.
By using a small team of support, Buprenorphine can be a short time aid. I have clinicians I trust who can do this well.
How many Al Anon members does it take to change a light bulb?
None. They leave it alone and let it screw itself.
How many alcoholics does it take to screw in a light bulb?
Just one – he holds the light bulb and the world revolves around him.
A couple of drunks go into a bar…
Hey! There’s nothing funny about alcoholism!
Weed is not addictive, is it?
That’s a much funnier joke than the last few. The majority of my clients in the last three years have been primary weed addiction.
Saying “weed is not addictive” was a lie 60 years ago and is even a worse lie today. You can find current articles reflecting what I have witnessed in my practice on my Resources page.
